Music Magazine Analysis (01)

Finished School Contents Page

This is my completed school magazine contents page. I have followed a structured layout to ensure that the contents page looks neat and well presented. I have left white gaps in-between each image on the contents page to keep to the codes and conventions of a magazine. I continued my color scheme of red, black and white from the front cover but i also decided to add a bit of yellow to make the page brighter and more appealing, I continued the color scheme so that all the pages linked together. To complete the contents page, i added little details such as page numbers to each headline to show which page each article was on. I have also included images from certain articles to draw the reader in but i also used pugs like the 'COMPETITIONS INSIDE' to encourage the reader to read through the magazine. Images used were of pupils within the school to help the magazine to be recognized as a school magazine and this would also add to the factors that make it appealing and readable, as the readers within the school will feel more connected with the magazine as fellow pupils are featured within it.

School Magazine Front Cover, Full Analysis

The masthead for my magazine bold, black font, typed in all capitals on a grey background, although the colours look dull they give off a very effective result when combined with the rest of the colours on the front cover. The font used appears to be quite formal but is not too formal that it would stop the students or others reading it. I have chosen this name As I am a student in King Henry’s Sixth Form, I believed that designing a magazine for the new coming sixth form students and the current students would help to give them an insight on our sixth form as well as giving them exclusives within the magazine to keep them interested and keen on reading the magazine. I found using the name ‘SIXTH FORM’ was a suitable name for my magazine because it relates to the content of the magazine but is also simple yet catchy. The masthead of my magazine is simple yet effective; it is typed in all capitals, a black font and a bold effect. I wanted my masthead to stand out more than the rest of the text on the front cover but I also didn’t want it to take over my cover, I feel like I have achieved this as it catches the audience’s eye but doesn’t distract them from the other features shown on the front cover.

The main image on my front cover is of a sixth form student, Eleanor Binley, I have chosen this image as it shows sixth form students have the freedom and comfort of wearing there own clothes whilst in school. The main image dominates the front cover but it doesn’t dominate to the point where the reader is distracted from the other features on the cover. I took this image on a 30 Megapixel camera against a background that I thought would help to make the editing process of the image to be simple and quick whilst still making an effective image. I used an image of a sixth form student so that it would intrigue the audience as there gives an idea of what some of the contents will be, it also would attract a student because they would see someone similar to their age so it could interest them as the magazine won’t be boring as it is filled with information supplied for sixth form students by the actual sixth form.

To edit the image, I have removed the background to leave the image with just the figure of the sixth form student. I have removed the background which included part of the school building and some greenery in the background, I did this in Photoshop. As you can see the final outcome of the image isn’t the neatest, it has rough edges and doesn’t look neat enough to be included on my front cover. As the image wasn’t good enough quality to put on my front cover, when I placed the image into InDesign, it feathered the edges to smooth them out; this gives the image a more polished look and makes it look professional whilst on a first attempt magazine cover.

On my magazine cover I have used three subsidiary images that are each turned between 5 and 10 degree or a -5 and -10 degree angle. Each subsidiary image has a black boarder around it, I added this to the image to make it stand out more and help make the front cover appealing and able to catch the audience’s attention. I have chosen these three images too be featured on the front cover as they help to show what other content the magazine has.

The first image I used was a medium shot of the head teacher Mrs Lewis, I have used this as a subsidiary image as it gives a clue as to what is in the magazine and that this could be one of the main articles included within the magazine. Using a picture of the head teacher can also give pupils an idea of what Mrs. Lewis looks like before they meet her.

The second subsidiary image I have used in a medium two shot of the heads of sixth form stood outside their conjoined classrooms but all we can see is a green hill, they are stood quite close together which could represent that they work closely together, this again gives an idea as to what is included within this issue of the magazine. It also allows students to see what the heads of sixth form also look like before they meet and interact with them. Both of the teachers have a genuine smile at positive vibe about them, this could represent that the sixth form is run by happy members which means it can be a happy and positive environment atmosphere to learn in.

The final subsidiary image I have used is one that I found on the internet, using an image off the internet can be found as being copyright. I have learnt from this mistake but as it is a practice design, I can improve by capturing and using all of my own images. This picture is a medium two shot of two girls, one whispering to the other whilst the other girl has a shocked look on her face. Having an image like this used on my front cover can give the impression that their may be some exclusive information given within the magazine, kind of representing a secret that the magazine shares only with its readers and nobody else, having this within the magazine can help attract the audience more because they will feel like they are more connected to the magazine.

On the left hand side I have used a sell line that reads “INSIDE”, this sell lines is in bold yellow writing that is also all in capital letters, I have chosen to design it like this so that it stands out to the audience and grabs their attention, the information below I have chosen so that it intrigues them to want to purchase the magazine and read what’s inside. I have listed the sell lines to show that the articles will not all be on one page and will all be shown on different pages. I have used a simple font for the sell lines but a different font for the information shown underneath; I have done this so the simple writing will catch the reader’s attention then they will further read the information underneath. I have continued the house style whilst creating this effect, underneath this are two of the subsidiary images.

On the right hand side of the magazine layout I have included another sell line that reads “WHAT’S THE GOSSIP”; this sell line is also in bold yellow writing and is also in capital letters. I have continued using the house style of yellow titles with black and red writing beneath whilst on a grey background. Underneath the sell line there is the third subsidiary image, underneath the third subsidiary image there is the information to go with the sell line, having this information helps to keep the audience happy because they like to feel like they are getting exclusive articles from their chosen magazine,

Whilst editing my magazine cover further I decided to create a pug to draw the reader’s attention more to a feature that would be included in this issue of the magazine.

Magazine cover throughout the process of creation

After my first lesson of starting to design my school magazine cover, this was the end result. I had decided to have a grey background with gradient that goes to white in the middle of the page; I have added a footer line and made the main image the dominant item of the front cover.

The second lesson of designing and I have added the title, moved the main image more central and added a header. I have made the text within the footer bold and a different kind of font.

After the third lesson of creating my front cover I have added my three subsidiary images, changed the colour of the masthead, added the sell lines, created a house style using the colours black, red and yellow with a
grey background and created a pug.

In the fourth lesson of designing I decided to change the layout of the magazine and decided to add more space between some of the information, I did this to create more of a set layout which works and makes the front cover look a lot neater and more professional, by doing this it got rid of the dead space that was on my front cover.

In the final lesson of designing this is my end
design, I have added the third and final
subsidiary image, it is at a slightly canted angle
, I have also moved the pug to a slightly canted
by doing this I have managed to remove all of
the dead space on my front cover and make it
look full without being over crowded.
