Evaluation - Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Evaluation - Question 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Whilst constructing my magazine, I have discovered several pieces of technology and software that I have never used before, the first one being Adobe InDesign.

InDesign is the software i used most frequently whilst constructing my magazine. Before producing my music magazine pages, I had a bit of practice getting used to the software and finding out all the different gadgets i could use within the software whilst completing my preliminary task. At first i struggled remembering what to do with the software as there was so many different things that needed to be done in order to complete a magazine page but after a while of practising i got the hang of it and started completing sections alot quicker.

Also i had never heard of or used Blogger before, Blogger is used as a way of tracking my work step by step. It is very simple and easy to use. I personally really like Blogger and really like the structure of the website. I have enjoyed displaying my work in this way as it has a structured layout but also i like all the different things you can do when presenting your work.

The hardest software i used was Photoshop, i found it hard to use at the start as it was really difficult to get the hang of and remember all the details that i had to use to achieve a successful background removal. I edited the majority of my images on Photoshop because it made the quality of the images better. The only negative comment i have about the program is that it was far too time consuming with all the little details that needed to be adjusted however it made a huge positive effect on the final outcome.

A creative way of presenting my work was using Prezi. It is an alternative way to present my work in a very different and appealing way. I haven't used Prezi before hand but it was really simple to get the hang of, i really enjoyed using it and creating lots of attractive presentations.

Another way of showing my work instead of traditional blogging was creating a Powerpoint Presentation. I have used it for many years to create presentations and I find it very easy to use. It is a simple way of displaying work.
A Powerpoint has to be uploaded on to Slideshare, an online application so that it can be seen on Blogger. Sometimes my Powerpoint Presentations would change once they had been uploaded onto Slideshare and I would have to upload it again and adjust things it had changed. I felt that was a huge problem with using this application but it was worth it as it creates a different way of posting on my blog. It makes my posts much more easy on the eye.

To capture my images i used a Samsung camera. This camera was high quality and with this i produced very good images when using them for my music magazine. I learnt alot whilst taking pictures as i had to think about the lighting, the pose, the mise en scene, the outfit of the model and also the outfit of the model, also it helped me get more familiar with my camera. I created planning documents for the images before hand so i didn't waste valuable time when taking the images.

During the construction of my music magazine I also used my laptop and the internet played the biggest role in the construction of a successful magazine. The laptop was used for searching the internet and using the new software and programs needed to complete the magazine. The internet was used to research into other magazines and into conventional things within magazines etc, the internet has been vital throughout the year of studying Media Studies.
I have came across new and old technology in the making of my magazine and i am sure that they will become useful again in the future.

Evaluation - Question 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

Evaluation - Question 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation - Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I personally would want my music magazine to be a part of one of the biggest publishing groups in Europe, Bauer. I would want this because they have 80 brands serving 19,000,000 people, they have a giant audience with 4/10 people experiencing one of their products. They state on their website;
"Our business is built on millions of personal relationships with engaged audiences."
The success of Bauer and the worldwide recognition they have could help my product grow and become more well know around the world. This would mean that i get supported by a company who understands the magazine industry like the back of their hands, they know all the ins and outs.
As HITS is a multi-platform brand i would want each platform to be as successful as the other. Bauer would offer different platforms such as a radio channel or a television program, by doing so it makes each platform very recognizable and would help develop my magazine into a well known brand.
Bauer state that they 'connect with diverse and valuable audiences' and this is exactly what i would be looking for when publishing my magazine.
Even though there are different publishing groups such as IPC media, i feel that Bauer has a lot more to offer and would push my magazine to it's full potential and i would help them by attracting a whole new audience to their huge fan base. Bauer produce brands such as Q and Mojo magazine, so if my media product was published by this huge company it's possible that my magazine could make it as far as Q and possibly even further. I feel Bauer would have open arms if i was ever given the chance to have my magazine published by them, i feel a fresh new magazine, like HITS, that would attract hundreds of new fans and pleased all as it's a mixed genre magazine would definitely be a new thing for Bauer to take interest in.

To distribute my magazine, i would want the biggest and best magazine distributor in the UK, Frontline.
Frontline sells and distributes over 160 magazine titles, including 54 of the top 200 selling titles in the UK. They publish magazines such as Q and Mojo. As Frontline are so successful, it would be the obvious choice to make when choosing the distributor of the magazine. Frontline also try to make a difference by raising money for good causes and charity's, and as i personally am a big fan of doing this i feel that if HITS was associated with this behavior it would appeal and interest a bigger audience and it would be even better if the readers could get involved.

Evaluation - Question 2

How does the Media Product represent a particular social group?

When starting to research what kind of magazine i wanted to create, i came across magazines that gave me the inspiration for my images, layout, color scheme and just the structure of the magazine. I wanted my magazine to appeal to a mixed genre audience but the majority to be pop fans. I wanted to appeal to 15/16 - 25 year olds and so i had to reflect these requests with the content within the magazine.

Whilst browsing through magazine covers i came across this image of Ed Sheeran, i loved the way he was posing and that got me thinking about how i wanted Michael to pose. I felt i could somehow incorporate Ed's pose onto the magazine cover but instead have Michael looking directly at the camera.

I decided to take the image of Ed and use a similar kind of pose when taking photos of Michael. Michael is wearing a full black and white suit but is carrying his blazer over his shoulder, this outfit represents a new artist and also shows that he is serious about making it big. The color scheme i chose of red, black, white and some yellow stands out on the page and also will appeal to my target audience as the colors work well together and make the front cover pop, this will appeal to the audience as they're young and
fun.

The images on my contents page reflect different aspects of the mixed / pop genre, this is because not every artist is the same. To fully grasp the content and trust you can get from a magazine i decided to take pictures of 2 real artists and a picture of one of the writers for the magazine. For example i have used a medium two shot of two artists together, i haven't seen any magazines do this but i felt my cover was very conventional so i tried to break it up a little bit, also i haven't yet seen a magazine include an image of one of their writers, i have done this i feel it will make my magazine stand out a lot more but will also help gain the trust of my target audience and readers. At the bottom of the contents page i have included all of the social media icons that we have accounts with, i have done this as the majority of the readers will be technophiles and by doing this it will keep them interested but will also give them access to even more information.

The information within my article i feel would appeal to my target audience as it's finding out all the personal details of a young upcoming star, i feel it would possibly appeal more to the females in the target audience as Michael is an attractive young male but would still appeal to males as he is of a similar age and can be achieving what other young artists aspire to do. The image of Michael that i chose for my double page spread is him standing against a brick wall, the wall isn't very clean or tidy but Michael is dressed in his full suit, but still isn't wearing a blazer. I have purposefully created this effect as it shows the readers that Michael is still one of them as he hasn't quite yet hit the top of fame and his still living in his home town where things aren't always pristine and tidy but it's where he's from and he's proud to be photographed there.
Overall i feel i have represented the social group accurately in my media product as i have researched all aspects of the mixed/pop genre seen and then tried to incorporate some ideas and designs into my own magazine. I feel my magazine would interest people with a love for this kind of music as they are the target audience for my magazine and i have tried to fulfill their needs and tried to make the magazine full of their preferred details and aspects and mostly content.

Final Draft Of My Article

THE NEXT BIG THING

Right here at the heart of ‘HITS’ magazine, in Central London it’s The First Official magazine interview with the next big star, Michael Moore. Get an exclusive inside look at his everyday life, find out everything you need to know about him and how his whole music career has taken off. Also, find out how to be one of the first to purchase his upcoming single “Touched”.

First of all, I have to say, you look very dashing in that navy suit and brown suede boots - very smart. You have such a great style! So, Michael most of the world has gotten to know you over the past month with your music topping the charts in over 50 countries. Everyone is loving and talking about you, including myself! Plus, you have gained over 1.5million followers on Twitter; you must be over the moon right?!

Aw thank you! I had to make an effort for my first official interview. But I must admit that I can’t believe it all happened so quickly and I feel like the luckiest person to have such an amazing opportunity to share my music with the world. And the fact that I have achieved this much success at the age of 17, makes me even more ambitious and motivated for the future years.

Describe a typical day in the life of Michael Moore.

Well, I still attend college 3 days a week. I drive myself to college most days – I have only had my license for about 4 months which is exciting and gives me a lot more freedom. After college I’d usually hang out with friends and would work on weekends but I quit my job to focus on my music career. Most people would expect my life to be all that glamorous but it really isn’t, well not yet. I also love to exercise and keep fit! I do spend some of my free time trying to respond to as many of my fans as I can on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

How did you first become interested in music?

I first became interested in music… well I can’t remember, probably ever since a young age. Everyone remembers me, even as a baby I loved to listen to music. I also started playing musical instruments like the piano, recorder, keyboard and especially the guitar all at the age of 7/8. I guess I just got the hang of playing instruments really easily.

Why did you name your new single that’s waiting to be released, “Touched” and what is it about?

I wrote this song and gave it this title because there are some amazing people in my life who influence how I create my music and what my music is about, but also this song is aimed at every single one of my fans. I am just so shocked at how they all support me so much and I love them all so much for that!!

Why did you choose to produce R&B music?

I think it reflects my personality and feelings and many people can relate to it – I have a very broad audience. Most of the teenage / adult population is listening to this genre of music and I just want to reach out to as many people as possible. My amazing record label helped me to produce my music and they used several production processes. I would not be able to do this without them and I am extremely grateful that they signed me.

What live performance experience do you have?

I started off with performing at local clubs and bars when I was 16, but I will be going on my world tour next year, once I’ve finished college. It will be taking place in 15 countries, which is very exciting - I can’t wait!

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?

I would describe it as music which is very modern and up to date with the latest trends and fashions, it is also music which is kind of addictive, you want to listen to it over and over again – it’s very unique and creates a positive vibe.

What are your immediate music and life goals?

To complete my world tour and produce tracks with major artists, maybe even perform with them! My dream concert would be to perform with Rihanna or Chris Brown; it would be a huge achievement for me to get this opportunity. I also want to donate money to third world charities of and in a few years’ time I’m definitely moving to Beverly Hills in L.A, for good! It has been one of my biggest dreams ever since I was little – I am obsessed with that place! It just has a really good vibe to it like the palm trees, hot weather all year round, and beaches, sunshine, amazing houses, cars, hot girls and the list goes on.

Do you think of yourself as a role model?

I feel I convey a positive image of a 17-year-old male teenager which many people can aspire and relate to; just because I am now famous it doesn’t mean that I am a different person who looks down on their fans – no… I feel like I am on the same level as them and we have a lot in common, I love all of my fans - without them I wouldn’t be here, but I do hope my attitude towards success does influence them and their decisions in life.

What advice would you give to young talented musicians like yourself?

Firstly you should believe in yourself and be confident. You have to be motivated and always work to your full potential and have a positive attitude – never give up!

Well, thank you for your time and doing this interview and I hope to see you continuing to hit the top of the charts with your new single Touched.

It’s been my pleasure, I do too! And I hope that my fans got to know me a bit better through this, I love you all.

Michael’s new single “TOUCHED” is to be released on March the 1st 2016, and will be available to purchase on the iTunes store. Claim 10% discount courtesy of ‘HITS’ magazine if purchased on the 1st of March, using the code ‘HITS01’. It is also available to buy in all HMV stores.

Finished Music Magazine Contents Page

This is my completed contents page for my magazine. I have now added the reviews section and have also added the masthead infront of the reviews title, this way the reader will be able to trust us further as they know that all reviews belong to 'HITS' magazine and haven't been written by just anyone. I have added a footer bar and within this bar is the social media logos that we have accounts with i have done this so my target audience can recognize that we are a multi-platform brand and we are expanding to accommodate to the changing society as more and more people are becoming techonophiles, there is also an indication that notes that our social media links are inside the magazine. There is also the date that the magazine has been published and the contents page number, also in the footer is a small masthead before the page number so that it can be recognized as a 'HITS' magazine page. I feel that now my contents page links in with the rest of my magazine so far.
I have added a black border around each side of the contents page, i feel by doing this i have brought the magazine together and made it look a lot neater. I feel that with the added changes it now looks more like a contents page. I have used faint grey lines in between each section so that it breaks the page up a bit but doesn't look hugely untidy and still looks neat.
I have changed a few little details on the page that i wasn't happy with, the biggest one being the color of the front that is beneath the subheadings, it was previously a really light grey and was hardly readable and noticeable so i changed it to a darker grey but still made sure that it was a different color to the subheadings themselves, by doing this i have made a clear definition between the subheading and there previews/pull quotes.
I am personally very happy with how my contents page turned out in the end, although it doesn't look identical to a professional music magazine, i feel i have tried to make it as sophisticated as i can. I have taken certain aspects from professional magazines and then changed and adapted them into my magazine. I have achieved everything i had planned to for the contents page, i have also added little details that weren't in my plan but definitely brought my page together. I feel that maybe the layout could been placed differently but overall i am very pleased with my final contents page.

Music Magazine Contents Page Progress

This is the beginning stage of my contents page. So far i have included a lot of detail, i have done this as i had a clear idea of what i wanted my contents page to look like, this helped greatly as it meant i was able to get a lot done the first time i started working on my contents page. I had previously edited and chosen my images so that they were able to be put straight on to the contents page when i started working on it.
On my contents page i have included the same masthead that i used on the front cover, by doing this i have made the magazine brand consistent and easily recognizable throughout. I have included my slogan beneath the masthead on the page so this also is consistent throughout. I have also situated a thin line going across the top of my page, in the center of this line is a red circle with the issue number located inside it, by doing this i have made it easily readable and recognizable for the readers to locate which issue they are reading.
I have continued the color scheme from the front cover so this also helps make the magazine flow. The biggest image on the contents page is the image of 'Michael Moore' this is because he is the main focus of the magazine, but for this image i again used an image where he was gazing directly into the camera. I feel the masthead on this page stands out hugely as it's so bold and is against a white background which also adds and makes it pop more.
I wanted to include an image of one of our review writers, this way it would help the reader to trust the magazine as they can see that our reviews are 100% real and trustworthy and aren't written by just anyone.
I have included a page number on the image of 'Michael Moore' as it will help the reader to locate the article they would like to read. I feel the images all work well on the page as it breaks up the plain white background but also adds a little edginess to the page.
I feel that i have made the 'features' section big enough and it has plenty of detail within it but it doesn't look overcrowded or cramped together. I feel have used a good range of colors and i feel it would really encourage the readers to purchase the magazine as it has plenty of content for them to read.
Currently it's not quite a contents page so over the next few days i will continue to work on the page and improve and add sections so that i can achieve an overall appealing and readable page that fits in with the rest of my magazine pages.

Finished Music Magazine Front Cover

The last thing I have edited on the front cover is the font within the pug, it is the only different font within the page! I did this as i feel it now makes it stand out even more than it did before. I also have adapted the spacing between some of the sell lines, i felt that previously the sell lines were too close together and difficult to read but now they are easily readable and definitely look a lot better.

I have now completed my magazine front cover and feel that there is no more i can do to it and it has been completed to the best of my ability. I feel the front cover definitely stands out and isn't too overpowering or in your face. There is a resemblance to a 'Q' magazine layout and structure but i feel i have put my own twist on it and made the magazine my own.

Music Magazine Front Cover Progress

In the next two hours of working on my front cover, I managed to add a splash and the sell lines on either side of the front cover. I find my magazine to be a very conventional layout, but it is very neat and appealing and i feel it is starting to become very eye-catching.
In the first hour I decided on a color scheme and layout for my splash. I decided to use all three of the colors in my color scheme, red, yellow and black. The name of the artist 'Michael Moore. is the biggest section of the splash, with the headline of the article and pull quote are then roughly the same size. By doing this I have achieved an equal amount of attention withdrawal to both parts, this way both sections have catchy titles or quotes which will entice the reader into purchasing the magazine and reading further into the magazine. The colors of the splash are vibrant against the white background and all compliment each other to achieve an eye-catching front cover.
In the second hour i added the sell lines to either side of the front cover. Throughout the front cover I used the font Bondi MT and continued to stretch it out and mess around with it within InDesign, by doing this i ensured that the front cover was consistent all over.
The sell lines are also consistent all over the front cover with bold black headlines in block capitals with red pull quotes and subheadings beneath it, there are also small black lines separating each headline (article feature) so that each one is easily identifiable and doesn't get confused with another. I have also used the names of well known artists so that it can add to attracting a reader as they will believe that if an unknown artist like 'Michael Moore' is the main focus in a magazine with 'Beyonce' they are more likely to purchase the magazine if that is they're preferred genre of music. I also added a pug to the top right hand side of the magazine where there was dead space, within the pug is a pull quote that will entice the reader to read within the magazine fully. The pug is a bold yellow color with a thick black outline and a thinner black font within it. I personally feel the pug stands out a lot as it is a bright yellow and as there isn't much yellow featured on the magazine it would catch the audiences attention more.
I also added a barcode with the short date and price printed on it, this way the audience have a clear idea of the price of the magazine and on which date it was published.
After adding sell lines i can still see the 'Q' representation but i still continue to make it my own personal magazine to avoid copyright etc.

Music Magazine Front Cover Progress

The first change i have made to my front cover is the masthead. I personally didn't feel as though the masthead was drawing enough attention so i altered it. I added a black header bar above the original masthead with my chosen slogan for the magazine in white font and i then further added a yellow box going down the left hand side of the masthead with the published date inside it in black font. I feel that by adding these small details I have achieved a bolder and more eye-catching masthead that will help my magazine cover to be individual and stand out above the rest.
As i add things to my magazine cover I find that I am similarly following the layout and design of 'Q' magazine but also making it my own and adding my own touch so that the two aren't exactly similar.

Music Magazine Front Cover Progress

I have started to work on my front cover for my music magazine. I have chosen this image as i feel it will appeal to the reader more but will also draw them in to notice the magazine. There is definitely a gaze look from the image which keeps the codes and conventions of a magazine. I feel this reflects the mixed music genre as he doesn't have a specific look, he is well dressed and you can't judge which music genre he sings just by looking at the image as he has quite a neutral look.
I have also started to create a masthead, i have decided to use the font Bondi MT in white, within a red box, and then using Photoshop I stretched out the text to make it appear longer and bolder.
Before placing the image onto the magazine cover, I removed the background in Photoshop as i had a clean image to work with. I have also placed the image on a layer above the masthead so that the image would overlap the masthead slightly and dominate the front cover but not too much.
Over the next few weeks i will continue to work on and improve my front cover to the best of my ability to produce the final piece.
